After-Builders Cleaning Checklist: What a Professional Clean Covers

When the trades finish, the building isn’t ready to hand over. Fine construction dust settles into every surface, protective film and adhesive residue cling to glass and fittings, and paint, plaster and silicone splashes are left behind. An after-builders clean turns a finished build into a finished space. Here is exactly what a professional after-builders clean covers, stage by stage.

The three stages of an after-builders clean

A proper after-builders clean is usually delivered in stages rather than one pass:

  • Initial (rough) clean — removing debris, stickers, large dust deposits and leftover materials once the trades are out.
  • Main after-builders clean — the detailed, top-to-bottom clean of every surface, fitting and room.
  • Sparkle (final) clean — the finishing pass just before handover, focused on glass, chrome, floors and anything touched since the main clean.

Room-by-room checklist

Throughout the building

  • Remove all construction debris, offcuts and packaging.
  • Peel protective film from windows, doors, worktops, appliances and sanitaryware.
  • Remove stickers, labels, paint, plaster, silicone and adhesive residue.
  • Dust and wipe all surfaces from ceiling level down — light fittings, vents, tops of doors and frames, skirting.
  • Clean switches, sockets, handles, rails and all fixtures.
  • Vacuum and then hard-floor-clean or carpet-clean every floor last.

Kitchens / tea points

  • Clean inside, outside and on top of all units and cupboards.
  • Degrease and polish worktops, splashbacks and sinks; descale taps.
  • Clean appliances inside and out.

Washrooms

  • Remove grout haze, plaster and sealant marks from tiles and sanitaryware.
  • Descale and sanitise WCs, basins, showers and taps.
  • Polish mirrors, glass and chrome.

Glazing and floors (sparkle stage)

  • Clean glass internally (and externally where access allows) to a smear-free finish.
  • Buff chrome and stainless fittings.
  • Final floor finish appropriate to the material — polished, mopped or extraction-cleaned.

After-builders clean vs sparkle clean

They aren’t the same job. The after-builders clean is the heavy, detailed clean that removes dust and construction residue across the whole site. The sparkle clean is the lighter final pass immediately before handover or client walk-round, making glass, metalwork and floors presentation-ready. On most projects you need both — the sparkle only looks right once the main clean has done the hard work.

Why use a professional team

Construction dust is fine, abrasive and gets everywhere; cleaned incorrectly it scratches glass and finishes or simply redistributes. Professional after-builders teams work ceiling-to-floor in the right order, use the correct products for each new surface, and can handle access, waste and tight handover deadlines. For commercial fit-outs and new builds it also means the right insurance, method statements and site compliance.

Frequently asked questions

How long after the builders finish should we clean?

Book the main clean once all trades are off site, then schedule the sparkle pass as close to handover as possible so it stays pristine.

Is after-builders cleaning different from construction site cleaning?

Yes. After-builders cleaning happens once the build is complete; construction site cleaning runs during the build to keep the site safe and tidy.

Do you clean windows and floors too?

Yes — glazing, floors, chrome and all fittings are part of the clean, finished in the sparkle stage.
